Accounts & billing

Do I need an account to use Evanreads?

No. You can upload a document and start reading without signing in. Your session is stored in your browser's local storage. Create a free account to sync across devices, save your reading history, and access AI features.

How do I create an account?

Click "Sign in" from the top nav and choose "Continue with Google." No separate password is needed — Evanreads uses Google OAuth through Clerk.

What subscription plans are available?

Free: 25 AI calls/day, 20 documents/month. Student ($7/mo with a verified school email): 100 AI calls/day, unlimited documents. Standard ($9/mo): same as Student, no school email required. All paid plans include every reading mode, TTS, and full AI features.

How do I upgrade or cancel my subscription?

Open your profile menu (top-right) and tap "Manage subscription." You'll be taken to the Stripe billing portal where you can upgrade, downgrade, or cancel. Cancellations take effect at the end of your current billing period — you keep access until then.

How do I delete my account?

Profile menu → "Delete account." This permanently removes your reading history, assignments, quizzes, and all stored data from our servers. The action is irreversible.

Where is my data stored?

Signed-in users: document text, session data, and progress are stored in Supabase (Postgres), hosted in the US. Anonymous users: everything stays in your browser's IndexedDB — nothing reaches our servers except text you explicitly send to AI features.

Reading modes & settings

What is bionic reading mode?

Bionic reading bolds the first half of each word. The idea is that your brain recognizes a word after seeing its first few letters, so the bold anchor lets your eye move faster. Toggle it in the Focus Modes panel inside the reader (the sliders icon).

What is the OpenDyslexic font?

OpenDyslexic is a free typeface designed to increase readability for readers with dyslexia. Each letter has a heavy weighted bottom to help prevent rotation and confusion. Enable it in Focus Modes → Font.

What is line-by-line mode vs. paragraph mode?

Line-by-line shows one sentence at a time. It is the default and works best when you find your attention jumping ahead before you've finished reading. Paragraph mode shows a short block (capped at 6 sentences) and is better for readers who find single lines too choppy.

How does text-to-speech work?

Tap the speaker icon in the reader toolbar to have the current line read aloud using your device's built-in speech synthesis. Use the TTS settings to pick a voice and adjust reading speed. TTS and bionic reading can run simultaneously.

What are flagged lines?

Tap the bookmark icon while reading to flag important lines. Flagged lines are saved per session and accessible from the "Flagged Lines" tab on your dashboard — useful for building a quick study reference without interrupting your reading flow.

What is the Classic vs. Fade highlight style?

Classic keeps the full-width highlight visible the entire time you're on a line. Fade softens the surrounding lines into the background instead, which some readers find less distracting. Switch between them in Focus Modes.

Documents & uploads

What file types can I upload?

Evanreads accepts PDF (.pdf) and Word documents (.docx). You can also paste plain text directly into the input field — no upload needed.

What is the file size limit for PDFs?

PDFs up to 20 MB are supported. Text-based PDFs (where you can select text in your PDF viewer) process instantly. Scanned or image-based PDFs use Tesseract OCR, which can take a few extra seconds per page.

My PDF isn't loading — what should I check?

First, confirm the PDF is under 20 MB and is text-based (not a scanned image). If the file contains only images, OCR may time out on very large documents. Try extracting the relevant section, or paste the text directly. If the problem persists, use the Contact form below.

Can I upload images with text (JPEG, PNG, etc.)?

Not directly — only PDF and DOCX files are supported. However, you can convert an image to PDF using your phone's native scanner or a tool like Adobe Scan, then upload the resulting PDF and Evanreads' OCR will extract the text.

Do my uploaded documents stay private?

Yes. Signed-in user documents are stored in a private Supabase database with row-level security — only your account can access them. Anonymous session text stays in your browser only. We do not use your document content to train AI models.

Are there limits on how many documents I can have?

Free accounts are limited to 20 reading sessions per month. Student and Standard plans have no document limit.

LMS & integrations

Does Evanreads connect to Canvas or Blackboard?

LMS integration is on our roadmap. When available, you'll be able to import assigned readings directly from Canvas, Blackboard, and other platforms without downloading files first. We'll email waitlisted users when it launches.

Can I import readings from Google Drive or Dropbox?

Not yet — cloud storage integration (Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive) is planned for a future release. For now, download the file and upload it directly, or paste text from the document.

Can my professor assign readings through Evanreads?

Not through a native integration today, but professors can share PDF links or files with students who then upload them into Evanreads. We are designing an instructor-side dashboard for the LMS phase — reach out through the Contact form if you want early input.

When will LMS integrations be available?

We're targeting a limited pilot with early partner institutions in late 2026. If you represent a school or disability services office that wants to be involved, please use the Contact form below and mention LMS in your message.

For schools & institutions

Does Evanreads offer institutional or volume pricing?

Yes. Schools, colleges, and disability services offices can request a group quote for 10 or more students. Use the Contact form below, select "Educational institution," and include your expected user count and institution name.

Can Evanreads be used as a disability accommodation?

Evanreads is designed to complement existing accommodations (extended time, screen readers, text-to-speech tools) for students with ADHD and dyslexia. Many students use it alongside Bookshare, Kurzweil, or their institution's existing tools. It is not a replacement for official DSS accommodations.

Is Evanreads FERPA compliant?

Our data practices are designed with FERPA in mind: student document content is stored in row-level-secured databases, only accessible by the student's own account, and not shared with third parties for advertising. Contact us for a full data processing agreement (DPA) for institutional use.

Is Evanreads accessible to screen readers?

The reader and core UI are keyboard-navigable and include ARIA labels on interactive elements. We continue to improve accessibility as a first-class requirement — WCAG 2.1 AA compliance is a sprint goal for later in 2026. If you encounter a specific accessibility barrier, please contact us.

How do I request a pilot for my school?

Fill out the Contact form below, choose "Educational institution / school inquiry," and describe your program. We offer free 30-day pilots for DSS offices and academic departments. We respond to institutional inquiries within 2 business days.
