Consider the font, with realistic expectations

Many readers genuinely prefer them and find them more comfortable, which matters — comfort keeps you reading. The research on specialty fonts specifically is mixed, so treat them as a personal-preference option worth trying rather than a guaranteed boost. Letter spacing and line spacing have stronger evidence than the letterforms themselves.
Strategies that stack with everything above
A few habits help every reader and cost nothing:
- Read in small sections. Smaller chunks mean less to hold in working memory and less crowding on screen.
- Space it out. Several short sessions beat one long one for retention — a well-established effect (Cepeda et al., 2006) — and long unbroken reading is especially tiring when decoding is effortful.
- Check understanding actively. After a section, recall or quiz yourself on the main points instead of re-reading. Retrieval builds durable memory more efficiently than review (Roediger & Karpicke, 2006) — valuable when every re-read costs real effort.
