- When letters or objects sit too close to the one you are trying to recognise, their features get jumbled together and it becomes hard to identify. Crowding depends on spacing rather than size, and it grows the further the text is from where your eyes are pointed.
If you have ADHD, you already know the loop: you read a paragraph, realize you absorbed none of it, and read it again. And again. Twenty minutes later you've "read" two pages and remember one sentence. It feels like a discipline problem. It isn't.
Reading asks your brain to do several demanding things at once — decode words, hold earlier sentences in mind, connect them into meaning, and suppress every competing thought — and ADHD makes exactly that combination harder. The good news is that the fix isn't more willpower. It's changing the conditions so your brain has less to juggle. Here are nine strategies that hold up under research, and why each one works.
1. Read one line or section at a time
A full page is a wall of competing signals. Nearby text causes visual crowding — clutter around a word measurably slows how fast your brain recognizes it (Pelli & Tillman, 2008). Add that to a working memory that can only hold a handful of items at once (Sweller, 1988), and a dense page overloads before anything consolidates.
Narrowing your focus to a single line or short section removes most of that load at a stroke. And for ADHD readers, cutting down eye movement may do more than that. When researchers flashed text one word at a time in the centre of the screen, so readers barely had to move their eyes, undergraduates with ADHD understood more than they did reading normally, while neurotypical students trended slightly the other way — a relative benefit the authors put at almost 13% (Moussaoui et al., 2025). Giving your eyes less to do isn't a crutch; for ADHD brains it can be an advantage.
2. Externalize the structure before you start
ADHD makes it hard to hold a plan in your head, so put the plan outside your head. Before reading, skim the headings and break the text into named chunks — "intro, three arguments, conclusion." A visible checklist of sections converts one overwhelming task into a series of small, finishable ones, and each check-off gives you a concrete signal of progress.
3. Use active recall, not re-reading
Re-reading is the most common study strategy and one of the least effective. It creates a feeling of familiarity that your brain mistakes for understanding — so you close the book confident, and remember little. The alternative is retrieval practice: close the text and force yourself to recall what it said. Students who were tested on material retained far more than those who re-read it, even when the re-readers spent more time (Roediger & Karpicke, 2006). A landmark review of learning techniques rated practice testing among the two highest-utility strategies of all (Dunlosky et al., 2013).
4. Work in short, timed sprints
A vague "read this chapter" has no edges, and ADHD struggles with edgeless tasks. Set a timer for 15–25 minutes and read only until it rings, then take a real break. The deadline creates urgency your brain can use, and the finish line is always in sight. This is the core of the Pomodoro technique, and it pairs naturally with section-based reading — one section, one sprint.
5. Try body doubling
Reading alongside another person — in the same room, on a video call, or in a library — is called body doubling, and many people with ADHD find it one of the most reliable ways to start and stay on a task. The mechanism is simple: a low-stakes sense of shared accountability makes it harder to drift off into your phone. You don't need a study partner who's doing the same work; you just need someone present.
6. Cut on-page and environmental distraction
Every extra element on the page — sidebars, footnotes, a blinking cursor, an open tab — is one more thing competing for attention you can't easily spare. Strip the reading surface down: full-screen, no notifications, one thing visible. Physical environment matters too, but the on-screen environment is the one people most often forget to control.
7. Let your ears share the load
Reading with your eyes and hearing the text read aloud engages two channels instead of one, which can anchor attention that would otherwise wander. Text-to-speech isn't "cheating" — for many ADHD and dyslexic readers it's the difference between finishing and stalling. Follow along with the highlighted line so your eyes and ears stay in sync.
8. Space your reading out over days
Cramming a long reading into one marathon session works against you: information learned in a single massed block decays fast. Spreading the same total time across several shorter sessions — distributed practice — produces dramatically better long-term retention, one of the most robust findings in all of learning science (Cepeda et al., 2006). Three 20-minute sessions beat one 60-minute grind, and they're far easier to start.
9. Make progress visible
ADHD motivation runs on immediate feedback, and reading gives almost none — a chapter looks the same at page 2 and page 20. Add your own signals: a progress bar, a completion ring, a running count of sections finished. Each small marker delivers a hit of "I'm getting somewhere" that abstract goals never do, and that feedback is often what keeps you in the chair.
